A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Akiva families,

Some of my favorite Shabbat memories require two items: a couch and a great book or scintillating magazine. There is nothing like the conversations in your heads that books can conjure up while surrounded in quiet…or even what you can remember when surrounded in lots of noise 🙂 as is often the case in our house on Shabbat.  Books have this uncanny ability to take us into new worlds, to learn about old ones and to implore us to think, dream and question more deeply.  The question that is often on my mind is how we can continue to help this next generation love and need reading for their sustenance, their happiness and their sense of meaning.  As our children grow up in a world that is very different from ours and of course even more different than that of our grandparents, I question whether they will all grow up to love the smell and the feeling of the pages of a book.  Will they yearn to read when their children are young and require their utmost attention all the time?  Will they yearn to read when their life needs wonder and insight?  And if so…what will we do in our schools and our homes to make this a reality?

We know that reading is foundational to an individual’s connection to the world and to opportunity in their future.  We know that consistent reading is often shown to be one of the greatest influences on higher standardized test scores when our children come to this in their educational careers.  There is also ample research that demonstrates that students who are read to are at a great advantage both in school and in their testing.  Still- reading can be hard.  When our children are younger and struggling readers, we may be tempted to say, “Let them be children…let them be outside and run and jump and play.”  I agree.  Let them be children.  Let them join you on a bench outside as you read a story to them.  Let them join you on a bike ride to reflect together on the book you just read.  Let them jump to the beat of the poetry you read to them.  Let them be children.  Help them be children.  Let them read their favorite picture book or novel to you again…and again…  As we enter our building each day, we walk past Akiva’s foundational stone that reads, “VShinantam Levanecha”…”and you shall teach them.”  Our job is to teach our children their Torah, their heritage, their story…and we learn about ourselves and our stories by reading our stories and others’ stories.  As Jews, we are known as the People of the Book.  We read the same book year after year.  We read the Torah out loud and listen.   These opportunities provide us with the language and the messaging to speak about our values, our fears, and our dreams for each other and our world.

As we read together, we teach our children that we have time for them, we want to be with them and there is value in simply sitting and reading.  They will learn that the fast-paced life that they so easily inhabit has its value and there is something remarkably beautiful about the slower pace of the story you share with them.  They see you in a different light when you read with silly voices.  They see you in a different light when you share a bit about your childhood while reading the autobiography of another’s.  They see you in a different light when they know that this sacred time is just for them with you…because they need us and they love us.

Please see this as an opportunity to engage lovingly and meaningfully with your child.  For some, it may feel uneasy or new.  For others, it may feel familiar and comforting…and this may change over time even with the same children.  Please join me in my commitment to read to my children, to read in front of them and to read together side by side as we dance and read our summer together.

The Akiva First grade team is so excited to get to know you and your children even better! While we look forward to our own adventures this summer, we are also working hard to prepare for the Fall and a great 1st grade year.

This summer, every child will be reading a book connected to the theme for the 2022-2023 school year: CommUNITY.  We are asking every child to read the assigned book for their grade  so that they are all prepared to speak together about our school theme when they return..  We have also included a list of other wonderful books that your child could enjoy over the summer.

All rising 1st-5th graders have worked incredibly hard this year to learn the math facts connected to their grade-level. We ask that you continue this learning at home so that your children will be confident and prepared for the year ahead.

Finally, every class has an opportunity to continue their Hebrew learning.  Even 5 minutes a day will help impact your child’s continued progress especially in their reading fluency and the expansion of their vocabulary, as we have already seen this year.

We hope this summer is FILLED with adventure and joy and a commitment to continue to model the idea that we value learning even out of the school context and that life-long learning is our commitment.
