A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Akiva families,
Books have this uncanny ability to take us into new worlds, to learn about old ones and to implore us to think, dream and question more deeply. The question that is often on my mind is how we can continue to help this next generation love and need reading for their sustenance, their happiness and their sense of meaning.
We know that reading is foundational to an individual’s connection to the world and to opportunity in their future. We know that consistent reading is often shown to be one of the greatest influences on higher standardized test scores when our children come to this in their educational careers. There is also ample research that demonstrates that students who are read to are at a great advantage both in school and in their testing. Still- reading can be hard. As we enter our building each day, we walk past Akiva’s foundational stone that reads, “VShinantam Levanecha”…”and you shall teach them.” Our job is to teach our children their Torah, their heritage, their story…and we learn about ourselves and our stories by reading our stories and others’ stories. As Jews, we are known as the People of the Book. We read the same book year after year. We read the Torah out loud and listen. These opportunities provide us with the language and the messaging to speak about our values, our fears, and our dreams for each other and our world.
As we read together, we teach our children that we have time for them, we want to be with them and there is value in simply sitting and reading. They will learn that the fast-paced life that they so easily inhabit has its value and there is something remarkably beautiful about the slower pace of the story you share with them.
Please see this as an opportunity to engage lovingly and meaningfully with your child. Please join me in my commitment to read to my children, to read in front of them and to read together side by side as we dance and read our summer together.
