Curiosity. Perseverance. Love of Learning.

The Educational Vision at Akiva School

Akiva School is a community K-6th school that is committed to maintaining a diverse population with regards to its socio-economic, denominational, and cultural composition. We strive to foster a love of learning that supports our children’s social, emotional, spiritual and intellectual growth. It is founded on helping children deepen their curiosity, morality, perseverance, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Akiva children are known for their sense of self, their ability to delve into diverse learning opportunities, and their meaningful contribution to their communities. The Akiva philosophy is predicated on the idea that we are all lifelong learners. We model what it means to ask questions, to take risks, and to fail and learn from these failures. These freedoms and responsibilities permeate the learning at Akiva. In doing so, our children develop their confidence, competence, and reflective practice. Students are empowered to understand their needs and to advocate for them as both individuals and as a community. We strive to help our children gain a rich understanding of their culture and heritage, their individual purpose, and their profound responsibility to the world. Our students become lifelong learners, leaders, and thoughtful contributors to this world.

Akiva strives to create an environment where every child is loved and nurtured and where every child recognizes his/her role in the Akiva community. We commit to these ideals so that the environment is both physically and emotionally safe so that each child can learn to his/her potential.

Our Values

Torah | תּוֹרָה

Torah is the source of our core values. Our curriculum draws upon the insight of commentators and scholars from every age to illuminate out text, and to encourage active dialogue.

Learning | לִמוּד

We value scholarship and the process of learning.  Our teachers seek to encourage critical, independent, and creative thought and expression in and out of the classroom while fostering a love of learning. We challenge all students to reach their highest potential.

Respect | כָּבוֹד

We believe every human being is created b’zelem elokim, in God’s image. While learning about and embracing our differences, we treat every person with honor, dignity, and respect.

Jewish People | כְּלָל יִשְׂרָאֵל

We emphasize a life-long commitment to and a sense of responsibility for the State of Israel and Jews worldwide.  Hebrew literacy and fluency unlock the richness of Jewish culture and connect our students with Jews everywhere.

Global Community | קהילה

Akiva is an inclusive and caring community. We welcome Jewish families with different traditions and view this diversity as a sign of our people’s continuing strength and vitality.

Responsibility | אַחֲרָיוּת

We have a responsibility to make the world a more peaceful, just, and compassionate place. Through acts of kindness and service projects, our students make a difference in their own communities and in the world.

Spirit | רוּחַ

We are a school that is filled with the joy of learning. Together, we celebrate, sing, dance, play, and create together in our hallways, in our hearts, and in our homes.
